Hansan:Riging Dragon

Feature Film

The sequel to <The Admiral: Roaring Currents>, which recorded the highest number of viewers in Korean film history, its entire pre-production process was carried out in virtual production for the first time in Korean live-action film. Leading this work from the first test to the end, for almost a year, I could develop and establish each steps of virtual production further than the previous works and tests. Through VR Scouting session, the director was able to navigate rough set made by the art department on a real scale in advance, make many artistic decisions before building the actual set. The director could fix the dialogue, design the blocking of actors and simulate all scenes in advance what would be filmed at actual set by attending the Performance Capture session, which were held for four months. After the mocap of the scene was finished, the datas were cleaned up and sent to the Virtual Cinematography session. Using the custom virtual camera rig, the director of photography could test and fix the layout. All 87 scenes of the film were produced through this process and I supervised all these sessions. All major members of the production including the director always participated in these sessions to exchange feedback in real time. I introduced source control to manage UE projects, organized folder structures and work order, and trained a lot of newly joined artists who were previously in the VFX department and were not familiar with the Unreal Engine. The final movs rendered from UE had sent to the editor who worked on the sessions with us, and as a result of the first edit, 3 hours of full 3d animation (of which 2 hours of shots were all operated by myself.) was created, and based on this, the production could adjust the scenario and trim unnecessary scenes before the crank-in.
